      Ralph's wife Dorothea comes into her own caring for the waves of Belgian refugees - some carrying tales of mutilation and horror

    2. Why aren't they leaving the boats?

      When the Belgians refuse to leave their boats, Isabel tries to speak to them and Ralph seizes a chance to be with her

    3. A refugee panics

      Having been bumped into the sea by a panicked Belgian, Ralph hears the man was arrested; his overture to Isabel is rebuffed

      Isabel and Dorothea help the refugees but Dorothea has begun to notice Ralph's reliance on the other woman

      Isabel chats to Marieke, a housemaid, who claims to have picked up abandoned baby Mathieu as she fled Louvain

      Marieke explodes when Ralph introduces a refugee couple who claim to be Mathieu's parents

    2. Mathieu's future is discussed

      Ralph tells Marieke that Mathieu would have a better life taking the place of the Drouet's dead child: she refuses
